회장님의 글쓰기 - 처세술(President of writing - conduct of life)

전작인 <대통령의 글쓰기>가 워낙 좋은 반응을 보여 꽤 짧은 시간에 이번에는 <회장님의 글쓰기>가 나왔다. <대통령의 글쓰기>에서도 회장님에 대한 이야기가 많이 나왔다. 저자가 글쓰기로 먹고 살아온 세월 중에 대통령보다는 회장님이라 불리는 어르신들의 글을 쓴 기간이 많다보니 회장님의 글쓰기가 함께 나왔다. 이번에는 아예 작정하고 회장님이 원하는 글쓰기에 대해 알려주는 책을 펴 냈다.

여기서 말하는 회장님은 대기업의 총수라고 부를정도의 회장님보다는 나보다 서열 위에 있는 분을 지칭한다고 말하는데 책을 읽어보면 꼭 그렇지는 않다. 우리가 흔히 말하는 회장님을 말한다. 내가 읽었을 때는 그랬다. <대통령의 글쓰기>에서도 대통령의 글쓰기만을 이야기한 것이 아니라 대통령이라는 자리가 갖는 어려움을 알려주고 대통령이 글을 쓰는 다양한 종류에 대해 알려주며 우리가 모르던 그 이면을 읽는 재미마저 보여줬다.

이번 책도 그런 의미에서 오랫동안 회장님의 가장 지근거리에서 보좌를 했던 저자의 상세한 이야기를 들을 수 있다. 다만, 책 제목인 <회장님의 글쓰기>만 생각하면 안 된다. 글쓰기에 대한 책으로 읽기보다는 회사에서 처세술로 읽는 편이 훨씬 도움이 될 것이다. 글쓰기에 대한 이야기보다는 회사에서 상사에게 어떤 식으로 다가가야 하고 어떻게 마음을 얻고 노력을 해야 하는지를 더 많이 알려주고 있다.

개인적으로 회사내에서 쓰는 보고서용 글쓰기는 잘 모른다. 어차피 육하원칙에 근거해서 쓰면 된다는 것을 알고 있지만 보고서를 많이 써 보지 않았기에 그렇다. 그나마 고정급을 받을 때 보고서를 올려 퇴짜맞은 적이 없지만 보고서 자체가 거의 없었기에. <대통령의 글쓰기>를 보면 그런 부분에 대해 팁을 알려주기도 하는데 그보다는 보고서를 쓰는 것보다 보고서를 읽는 사람이 중요하다고 알려준다. 보고서를 읽는 사람의 입장에서 쓴 보고서가 최고의 보고서다.

1장과 2장은 처세술에 가까운 내용이라고 생각되고 3장과 4장에 가서 진짜로 글쓰기에 대한 이야기가 나온다. 그중에서 이 책의 제목과 근접하고 제목에서 원한 내용은 마지막 4장 '강 상무는 어떻게 글쓰기로 임원이 되었나?'에서 나온다. 딱히 회사에서 쓰는 글뿐만 아니라 개인이 글쓰기를 위해 어떤 노력을 해야 하는지 알려준다. 가장 인상깊었던 내용은 어느 베스트셀러 저자가 글쓰기 특강을 했다. 모든 사람에게 한 마디를 한다. "글을 쓰고 오신 분들이라면 여기 있으면 안 된다. 다들 빨리 집에 가서 글을 써라" 이런 식의 이야기를 하고 특강을 끝냈다고 한다.

저자가 글을 쓴 시간과 내용뿐만 아니라 위치도 나와 비교가 되지 않지만 공감하기도 했고 글쓰기와는 딱히 연관이 없는 처세술 이야기가 나와 내 기대에 부합되지 못하기도 했다. 내용 자체는 문제 없었지만. 출판사에서 바닥부터 일하려고 했는데 <대통령의 글쓰기>가 뜻하지 않게 베스트셀러가 되어 책을 쓰는 것으로 먹고 살 수 있고 글쓰기 강의를 들었던 저자가 1년 만에 글쓰기 강의도 하고 있다 한다. 제대로 된 글을 쓰는 것이 개인을 어떻게 변화시켜주는지 저자 스스로 보여줬다. 그래서 부럽다. 출발선이 비록 달랐지만.
