글을 쓰는 것은 크게 소설과 에세이로 나눈다. 영어로 말하면 픽션과 논픽션이다. 어느 글이든 둘 중의 하나에 속한다. 픽션에 논픽션이 들어가기도 하고 논픽션이지만 픽션이 어느 정도 가미되기도 한다. 그래야 글이 좀 더 윤기있고 재미있게 읽을 수 있다. 담백한 글은 담백한 글대로 읽을 수 있지만 나혼자 쓰는 일기가 아닌 남이 읽을 것을 전제로 한 - 거의 모든 글은 타인이 읽을 것을 전제로 한다 - 글은 읽는 사람이 재미(감동,정보, 기타등등)가 있어야 한다.

내가 지금까지 쓴 글은 전부 에세이류였는데 소설을 쓰고 싶다는 생각이 들었다. 아무리 생각해도 나에게 멋진 소설을 쓰는 것만큼 멋진 일이 또 있을까? 그만큼 어렵고 힘들고 뼈를 깎는 노력을 요하는 글쓰기지만 보람이 더 클 듯 하다. 솔직히 최근에 글쓰기와 책쓰기 책을 읽으며 글을 더 안 쓰고 있다. 이건 완전히 인지부조화다. 열심히 글을 쓰고 책을 쓰기 위해 읽고 있는데 정작 글을 오히려 못 쓰고 있다니 말이다.
