개인적으로 <최고의 습관>을 읽으며 계속 생각했던 것은 바로 나 자신의 마케팅이다. 스스로 마케팅이 제일 약하다고 생각한다. 내가 하는 일이 1인 기업이라 할 수 있는데 나 자신을 알리는 것을 계면쩍어 하거나 시간이 지나면서 조금씩 알려질 것이라 봤다. 지금까지 4권의 책을 펴 냈는데 개인적으로는 미진한 점도 있지만 분명히 나쁘지는 않다고 믿고(?) 나랑 차이가 없는 책이 훨씬 더 사랑 받는 것을 보며 아쉬워하기도 했는데 정작 내 자신이 어떤 노력을 했는지 되돌아보면 없다라고 해야하지 않을까.

책을 읽으며 그 생각을 계속했다. 너무 노력을 하지 않았다. 날 알아주기를 더이상 기다리지 말고 스스로 노력하자. 무조건 노력하는 것이 아니라 저자가 노력한 것처럼 정확한 타켓을 정하고 그들이 관심을 갖도록 하는 것조차 하지 않으며 '책을 냅네' 하고 고작 활동하는 몇몇 곳에만 책이 나왔다고 하는 것은 부질없는 짓이다. 아이템을 발굴하여 최소 비용으로 최대효과를 낼 수 있는 방법을 고민하며 명분을 준다면 서로 윈윈이 되지 않을까. 이제는 그런 노력을 해야 할때라 스스로 느끼기도 했고.

<최고의 습관>을 읽으며 저자가 현재는 음지(?)에서 활동하고 있는 인물이지만 - 서울시와 함께 여러 프로젝트도 운영한다 - 끊임없이 노력하는 모습을 보며 나를 돌아보게 된다. 무조건 너는 할 수 있다가 아니라 할 수 있게 가장 효과적인 방법을 찾고 사람들의 관심을 끌어모으는 노력이 인상적이었다. 책의 표지나 제목에서는 그런 점이 느껴지지 않아 다소 아쉽다. 부담없이 읽을 수 있지만 사업이나 자영업을 하는 사람들에게 꽤 도움이 될 책으로 보인다. 나를 대입하면서.
