한국의 글쟁이들 - 글을 쓰는 삶(The writer the Korea-life writing)

한겨레 신문에서 주말 섹션으로 여러 작가들을 대상으로 인터뷰한 내용을 책으로 출간한 것이다. 나온지는 조금 되었는데 그동안 차일피일 미루다가 이번에 읽기로 마음먹고 읽었다. 책 제목은 상당히 거창하다. '한국의 글쟁이들'이라고 한다. 한국에서 글을 쓰는 사람중에 글쟁이라는 호칭을 받을 정도니 글만큼은 인정을 받는다는 이야기가 된다. 도대체, 어떤 인물이 그런 선택이 되었는지 괜히 궁금하다.

이들 중에는 이믹 익숙히 알고 있는 사람도 있고 집필한 책을 읽은 사람도 있고 처음 접하는 사람도 있다. 책이 출판된 년도가 2008년이라 그 이후에도 활발한 집필 활동을 펼쳤을텐데 아직까지 내가 이름을 모르고 있다니 도대체 읽어야 할 책이 한도 없고 끝도 없다는 것을 다시 한 번 절감한다. 한편으로는 얼마나 편협된 독서를 했기에 아예 이름도 모르는 작가들이 이렇게 많을까하는 심정이었다.총 7명을 모르고 있으니 만만치 않은 인원이다.

책에 소개된 작가들의 또 다른 공통점은 자신의 전공분야와 연관되거나 전혀 관련이 없는 분야이거나 책으로 펴낸 내용이 결코 어렵지 않게 글을 쓴다는 것이다. 자신의 분야에서 전문가로 행사하는 사람들이 편협되고 잘난 체를 하느라 쓸데없이 어렵게 글을 쓰고 본인도 잘 모르는 뜻을 마구 남발하다보니 책으로 펴 내는 경우도 드물고 자신들의 성 안에서 머물러 있으면서 이 책에 소개된 작가들을 오히려 욕한다. 전공자가 아니라거나 수준이 낮다거나 자신들의 무리에 끼지 못한 사람으로 폄하한다. 이런 점이 외국과는 많이 다른 측면이다. 외국도 분명히 어느 정도는 그러하겠지만 그런 그들도 각자 자신의 분야 책을 펴 내는데 반해 우리는 대중과의 괴리감이 크다.
