2015년부터는 리뷰중에 몇 몇 책은 기존과는 다른 형식으로 리뷰를 쓰기로 마음 먹었다. 그 첫 번째로 선정된 책이 <나는 이런 책을 읽어왔다>이다. 워낙 독서와 관련되어 독보적인 존재다. 세계적으로 유명한지는 모르겠다. 일본어라는 한계가 있었을테니. 아마도 전 세계적으로 이 책의 저자인 '다치바나 다카시'를 뛰어넘을 독서가는 없을 듯 하다. 이를테면, 누군가 인터뷰를 하기 위해서는 그가 저술한 모든 책과 논문까지 전부 다 읽은 후에 만난다.

어떤 분야이든 흥미가 생기면 사람 높이 정도되는 책을 읽는다. 나같은 사람이 그나마 읽는 것으로 그친다면 관련 종사자를 찾아가 이야기를 나눈다. 관련 전문가에게 질문을 하고 의견을 정취하지만 아니다싶으면 반론을 한다. 전문가는 깊게 보는 장점이 있지만 좁게 보는 단점이 있다. 전문가만큼의 해당 분야의 식견은 없어도 넓게 다른 측면까지 고려하는 '다치바나 다카시'의 의견에 전문가가 제대로 대처를 못하기도 할 정도다.

이 정도의 독서가라면 진정으로 책으로 모든 것을 배웠다고 자신있게 외칠 수 있다. 실제로 거의 모든 분야에 대해 책으로 학습하고 스스로 정리할 정도의 지식을 만들어낸다. 관련 분야의 책까지 펴 낼 정도로. 이런 사람이 쓴 <나는 이런 책을 읽어왔다>이다. 많은 부분에서 공감했고 내가 쓴 <책으로 변한 내 인생>에서 언급한 내용과 흡사(감히 비교자체가 황송하지만)해서 깜짝놀라기도 했다. 그 첫 번째 이야기를 시작한다.

시대가 변해서 과거처럼 문학작품이 사람들에게 선택되지 않는다. 문학작품보다는 수단으로 활용할 책들이 더 많이 출간되고 사람들에게 선택된다. 이런 현상을 개탄하는 식자층이 있다. 이들은 혹시 자신의 밥그릇을 안타까워하는 것은 아닐까? 책은 유일한 목적이 아니다. 단순히 목적으로 독서는 TV와 영화를 비롯해서 엄청나게 많은 새로운 것들에게 그 자리를 넘겨주었다. 점점 사람들은 현실에서 충분히 직접 실시간으로 볼 수 있다. 문학작품보다 더 신기하고 흥미롭고 오감을 충족하는 것들을.

고전이라고 하는 것들은 대부분 시간이 지나도 살아남은 저력과 이유가 분명히 존재한다. 그 점은 간과할 수 없고 인류에게 큰 보탬이 된 것은 사실이다. 그렇다고 그 작품들을 꼭 읽어야 할 이유는 없다. 우리가 현재 당장 읽는 모든 책에서는 고전이라 불리는 책들에서 언급한 모든 사상과 지식이 존재한다. 그것도 쉬운 표현으로 이해하기 편하게 알아들을 수 있는 언어로.

고전을 읽지 않는다고 말한다. 그 이야기는 고전이 갖고 있던 매력이 사라진 것이다. 이제 고전이라 불린 책들에서 말한 것들은 현대인들에게 사용가치가 사라졌기에 읽지 않는 것이다. 현대인들이 고전에서 말한 가치를 모르는가? 고전은 읽지 않아도 다들 알고 있다. 꼭 고전을 읽어야 플라톤과 소크라테스와 공자가 어떤 이야기를 했는지 아는 것은 아니다. 다양한 형식과 방법과 매체를 통해 현대인들은 고전이 출간되었던 시대의 사람들보다 더 많이 알고 있다.
