어차피 상대방은 내가 하는 이야기를 전부 다 알아듣는다. 너무 잘못된 말을 하면 정정도 해주니 자연스러운 대화를 할 수 있게 된다. 무조건 외국인과 만나 이야기를 하도록 노력한다. 언어를 습득하기 위해서는 초기에는 집중적으로 습득하도록 노력한다. 하루에 할애할 수 있는 시간은 전부 투자한다. 생각도 배우는 외국어로 생각한다. 막히면 해당하는 단어를 찾아보며 외국어로 생각한다. 3개월 만에 완벽하지는 않지만 어느 정도 의사소통은 가능한 단계에 도달한다.

예전과 달리 지금은 외국인들을 만나는 것이 어렵지 않다. 굳이 거리로 나가 외국인들과 만나는 것이 아니라 인터넷에서 찾아 대화를 한다. 그런 목적을 갖고 있는 사람끼리 대화를 할 수 있게 주선해주는 사이트도 있고 저자가 만든 사이트를 통하는 것도 방법이다. 아랍어와 중국어까지 그렇게 습득했다고 한다. 외국인들에게 중국어는 어려운가보다. 아무래도 한자때문이 듯 했다. 단어를 외우기 위해서는 연상방법을 써서 외운다. 너무 시간이 오래 걸릴 듯 하지만 처음에 힘들어도 어느 정도 적응이 되면 금방 연상으로 자연스럽게 단어가 떠오를 수 있다고 한다.

<3개월 안에 유창해 지는 법>은 열심히 노력하는 것이다. 책은 내용에 비해서는 분량이 좀 많다. 중간에 각 언어를 공부하기 위한 방법을 설명하는데 전혀 관심도 없는 언어는 대략 읽었다. 어차피 그걸 읽는다고 도움 되는 것도 아니고 배울 생각도 없는 언어라서. 그래도 머리속으로 습득해야 할 방법을 다시 한 번 입력하는 시간이었다. 틈틈히 하는 것보다는 집중적으로 하는 것이 좋다고 말한다. 고로 지금은 집중적으로 할 마음의 여유가 없으니 기억만 하고 있어야 겠다.
