어느날 신문을 읽고 있는데 유럽에서 유명한 작가에 대해 설명을 하는 기사를 읽게되었다. 거기서 두 명의 작가를 소개하는데 한 명은 요네스 뵈로 이미 두 편의 작품을 읽은 작가였지만 카를로스 루이스 사폰은 처음 듣는 작가였다. 한 명은 이미 작품을 읽어 알고 있어 그런지 몰라도 기사의 내용을 볼 때 요네스 뵈보다는 사폰이라는 작가가 더 유명하고 많은 판매고를 했다는 것을 보였다.

당연히 재미있는 작품에 대해서 늘 목말라 하고 있는 사람으로써 머리에 키핑을 했다가 작가에 대해 알아보니 꽤 유명하고 우리나라에서도 어느정도의 인지도를 갖고 있는 작가였다. 장르는 당연히 추리, 스릴러 작품으로 생각했고 사폰의 첫 작품인 '바람의 그림자'부터 무려 4편의 작품이 우리나라에 이미 다 출판되어 있어 첫 작품인 '바람의 그림자'부터 읽기로 했다. 이유는 모르지만 찾는게 쉽지 않았다. 그런데, 보니 이번에 내가 읽은 문학과 지성사가 아니라 문학동네에서 출판을 다시 했다.

요네스 뵈와 함께 소개된 작품이니 추리, 스릴러 작품이라고 생각했고 의례 그렇듯이 미국류의 추리 소설로 생각했는데 읽어보니 정통 유럽소설이였다. 아가사 크리스티 작품처럼 최근에 국내에 소개된 유럽 추리소설과는 또 다른게 굳이 이야기를 하자면 움베르토 에코의 '푸코의 진자'와 비슷하다고 할 수 있다.

단순히 스토리가 중시되는 작품이 아니라 일반 문학작품과 같이 소소한 내용들과 묘사가 추리 소설과는 달리 문학적인 뉘앙스(??)를 풍긴다. 아니, 이 소설은 추리 소설로 생각하고 읽는것보다는 한 소년의 성장소설로 생각하고 읽는 것이 더 좋을 듯 하다. 마이클 코넬리의 추리, 스릴러 장르를 생각하고 읽게 되면 그 느림에 답답함을 느끼게 될테고, 최근 우리나라에서 한참 유행하고 있는 '백설공주에게 죽음을'의 넬리 노이하우스를 생각하면 범인은 커녕 도저히 추리 소설을 읽는다는 느낌이 들지 않는다.

처음에 추리 소설을 읽는다는 심정으로 읽었고 어딘지 음밀한 서점에서 아무도 모르는 자신만의 책을 선택한다는 묘사에서는 제대로 된 미스터리 추리 소설을 읽게 될 것이라는 묘한 기대감이 있었지만 읽으면 읽을수록 정말 천천히 하나씩 하나씩 서서히 양파 껍질을 까듯이 작품속에 나오는 추리가 나온다.

여전히 주변 사람들에 대한 묘사가 진행되고 그 인물들이 주인공이 찾고자 하는 '바람의 그림자'의 저자와 알게 모르게 조금씩 다 연관되어 있다는 걸 하나씩 알게 된다.

1부에서는 그 어떤 해결도 보여주지 않는다. '바람의 그림자'라는 작품을 남긴 저자와 관련된 주변인물과 저자의 과거에 대해 조사를 하며 점점 그 실체로 들어간다. 여전히 알고자 하는 궁금증에 꼬리정도만 알게된다. 주인공은 1부에서 점점 사춘기의 성장통을 겪고 청년이 되어 새로운 사랑도 하고 주변 사람들이 모여 들지만 그들도 알 수 없는 의문을 갖고 있는 인물들이다.

솔직히, 읽으면서 좀 지루했다. 순전한 추리소설을 생각했는데 그런 작품이 아니라 그에 대한 선입견을 벗어나기가 꽤 힘들었다. 작품에 대한 칭송이 워낙 훌륭해서 더더욱 '밀레니엄'을 생각하고 읽었던 것이 가장 큰 이유가 아닐까한다. 차라리 아무 고정관념없이 소설 한 편을 읽는다는 생각으로 읽었다면 좀 진득하게 읽으려고 하지 않았을까 한다.

그러다 보니 좀 조바심을 갖고 책을 읽게 되었고 책 후반에 가서 겨우 마음을 진정시키고 본격적으로 읽게 되었다. 그나마, 책이 1,2부로 나눠져 있어 2부부터는 보다 차분한 마음으로 추리 소설을 읽는다는 생각이 아니라 일반 소설을 읽는다는 개념으로 읽어야 할 듯 하다.

그나저나, '바람의 그림자'의 저자와 주인공은 분명히 어떤 연관성과 연결고리가 있을 듯 한데 그에 대한 이야기가 언제 나올지 궁금하다. 그리고, 주변 사람들은 치밀하게 작가가 구성한 인물로 보이는데 이 들은 언제부터 본격적으로 '바람의 그림자'에서 생각지도 못한 놀랄일을 하게 될지 2부로 가야겠다.
