내일 - 오늘의 증거(Tomorrow - Today's evidence)

기욤 뮈소의 책을 다 읽었다. 기욤 뮈소가 우리나라에 소개된 후에 전작들까지 한꺼번에 쏟아질 때 예전 작품과 그 해에 출간된 작품까지 전부 읽었다. 실용서적만 열심히 읽다 소설을 읽자며 막 이런 저런 소설을 읽게 되었을 때 우연히 지인이 기욤 뮈소의 책을 읽고 있어 함께 읽었다. 그 지인이 신간이 나오면 항상 구입하기에 덕분에 항상 읽었다. 스피드한 진행과 헐리우드 영화를 보는 듯한 느낌이 기욤 뮈소의 가장 큰 장점이었다.

소설은 역시나 스토리가 좋아야 한다고 믿는다. 창작소설이나 문학작품은 단순히 스토리뿐만 아니라 얼마나 잘 심리를 묘사하고 배경설명을 해 주고 기타등등의 요소가 중요하지만 역시나 스토리가 좋아야 한다고 철썩같이 믿고 있다. 아무리, 색다른 시도를 하고 기가막힌 글빨을 갖고 있어도 소설을 읽으면서 내용이 재미없다면 소설을 읽어야 할 이유가 없다고 생각한다. 재미라는 측면이 꼭 예능프로와 같은 재미가 아니라 다큐와 같은 재미라도 상관이 없지만 스토리의 힘을 믿는다.

최근에는 더글라스 케네디에 빠져 있지만 두 작가는 공통점이 프랑스를 기반으로 활동하고 있다는 것과 배경은 미국이라는 것이다. 둘 다 대중소설 작가이고 내용이 아주 통속적이지만 재미있다는 것이다. 대중소설이라는 말은 외국은 의미를 부여하지 않고 장르소설로 구분하는 것으로 알고 있어 어딘지 모르게 대중소설이라고 하면 우리는 좀 순수와는 동 떨어진 개념으로 보는것이 아쉽기는 하지만 보통명사처럼 쓰고 있으니.

여기까지는 기존의 기욤 뮈소의 작품들과 비슷하게 전개가 되었다. 이렇게 둘은 서로를 어떻게해서 우여곡절끝에 만나 분명히 사랑을 할 것이다. 어떻게 둘이 만나 사랑을 이루게 될 것인지를 궁금증을 갖고 읽으려고 하는데 배신을 때린다. 남자는 교통사고로 죽은 자신의 부인을 살려달라고 한다. 이렇게 부인이 살게되면 분명히 둘의 관계는 이어지지 못할 것이라는 생각에 색다른 호기심으로 이끈다.

하지만, 예측하지 못한 전개가 펼쳐진다. 이 점이 바로 기욤 뮈소가 스토리텔러로써의 능력자라고 생각된다. 뻔하다고 하면 뻔한 내용을 갖고 참신하고  색다르게 호기심을 갖고 흥미있게 읽을 수 있는 능력이야말로 지겹지 않게 계속 새로운 책을 출판해도 역시나 다시 한 번 책을 집어들어 읽게 만들게 한다. 중간까지는 둘이 연락을 하지만 중간에 노트북이 고장나며 남자는 퇴장을 하고 여자만 활약을 한다. 연인관계의 이야기를 추리적인 관점에서 풀어내서 흥미를 이끌어내는 점이 가장 탁월한 능력이라 본다.
