프라하의 묘지 2 - 믿고 싶은 바를 믿는다(il cimitero di praga - believe what you want to believe)

'푸코의 진자'는 읽는데 어려움을 겪었지만 참 재미있게 읽었다는 기억이 남아 있다. 그것도 벌서 10년도 훨씬 지난 일이라 그 후로 움베르토 에코의 책을 몇 권 정도 더 읽었는데 읽는데 어려움은 예전만큼 있지 않지만 반대로 예전만큼 재미있게 읽은 책이 없다. 이번 '프라하의 묘지'는 푸코의 진자와 가장 가까운 책이다.

음모론을 이야기한 책이라 '푸코의 진자'를 예상하면서 저자의 지적 유희를 즐거운 마음으로 쫓아가면 읽으리라 마음을 먹고 읽었다. 예상대로 글은 빽빽하고 쉽게 술술 읽히는 것은 아니지만 읽는데 큰 불편함은 없이 읽을 수 있었지만 재미라는 측면에서는 솔직히 별로였다. 아예 재미없다고 할 수는 없지만 재미읽게 읽는다는 그 감흥은 이번에도 얻는데 실패했다.

거짓말도 계속 듣고 또 듣고 비슷한 상황이 생기면 어느 순간부터 거짓은 사실이 되어 버린다. 진실은 사람들에게서 완전히 잊혀진다. 세월이 흐르면서 사람들은 이제 거짓을 진실로 믿어 버린다. '프라하의 묘지'에서 하는 이야기가 바로 그것이다. 특히, 책 거의 말미에 이에 대한 일반 대중의 의식과 몽매함에 대해 일장연설을 하는데 솔직히 인정할 수 밖에 없다는 생각을 했다. 무엇보다 사람들은 자신에게 당장 피해를 입히는 것이 아니라면 관심이 없고 단순히 흥미꺼리 이상도 이하도 아닌 정도의 관심과 호기심을 가질 뿐이다.
