Spirit Fingers! A TVING Exclusive Drama Based on the Hit Webtoon!

Spirit Fingers, which was serialized on Naver Webtoon from 2015 to 2019 for about four years, has finally been reborn as a TVING original drama. This work, which built a solid fandom from its serialization days, is still remembered by many readers as a "life-changing webtoon" even after its conclusion. The growth story of an ordinary high school girl finding her own color through an art club resonated deeply with many, offering warm comfort. Thanks to this popularity, the news of its dramatization garnered significant anticipation even before its release. All eyes are on how the drama will capture the emotion of the original work, appealing to both existing fans and new viewers alike.

The popularity of Spirit Fingers was not confined to just Korea. Its potential was so great that various media expansions were attempted even before the drama production. Among fans, a game adaptation was discussed, but unfortunately, it did not lead to final production. Furthermore, thanks to its lively characters and vibrant colors, the possibility of an animated adaptation was also reviewed. This proves the inherent power of the original story and visuals. Beyond that, it was even remade and serialized as a local webtoon in Indonesia, proving its popularity and potential as content that transcends borders.
The drama Spirit Fingers is a textbook example of a teen drama and youth story based in romantic comedy. As is common with works depicting the lives of high school students, a sense of fresh-faced youthfulness and vibrancy dominates the series. While realistic concerns such as college entrance exams or grades often appear due to their student status, this drama focuses on a slightly different point. Of course, the academic stress and career worries the protagonist experiences are present in the background, but Spirit Fingers places a much greater emphasis on the inner journey of "finding oneself."
At the center of the story is the protagonist, Song Woo-yeon, played by actress Park Ji-hu. Woo-yeon is an extremely ordinary high school student with an unremarkable appearance, a timid personality, and no special talents, who considers herself "below average." Park Ji-hu, who recently showed impressive performances in works like All of Us Are Dead and Little Women, is solidifying her position in the teen romance genre with this role. Her unique, clear and pure image, combined with her delicate emotional expression, is evaluated as being perfectly optimized for portraying the complex sensitivities of a teenage girl. The fact that she was born in 2003, making her 21 in real life, also increases her synchronization with the character and serves as a powerful advantage in helping viewers immerse themselves.
Her counterpart and the male lead, Nam Ki-jeong, is played by actor Jo Joon-young. Boasting a clean and handsome visual, Nam Ki-jeong is a high school student who also works as a model. He appears cold and indifferent on the outside but is warm-hearted on the inside, possessing a classic tsundere charm. Jo Joon-young has made his face known through several works, but as a main lead, he still brings a sense of freshness. In a teen drama, the visual chemistry and fresh appeal of the male and female leads are crucial elements that can determine the show's success. In that respect, the combination of these two rising stars, Park Ji-hu and Jo Joon-young, offers viewers both excitement and the joy of a new discovery, breathing vitality into the drama.
The story begins as Woo-yeon, in the midst of her mundane daily life, makes an unplanned deviation. At home, she is always overshadowed by her high-achieving older brother and younger sibling, and at school, she is treated as an "invisible" person with no presence. One day, she spots a handsome boy on the street who is close to her ideal type and impulsively follows him. Despite being extremely shy, she musters the courage, mesmerized by his good looks, and stumbles upon a mysterious art club called "Spirit Fingers." There, she receives an unconventional offer to be their model.
Upon visiting the club after receiving the modeling offer, Woo-yeon is slightly disappointed to find that the "Spirit Fingers" members aren't as skilled at drawing as she expected. Only the club's leader, Gu Seon-ho (played by Choi Bo-min), the boy she initially fell for, is an art student preparing for college entrance exams. The other members are just amateurs who enjoy drawing. However, the members make another suggestion to the disappointed Woo-yeon: not just to model, but to draw with them. When Woo-yeon learns the true purpose of the club—to express oneself through art, inspire each other, and grow together—she feels her heart race for the first time in her life.
However, Woo-yeon has a "jinx" whenever she faces a new challenge: something unexpectedly bad always happens right when she decides to start something new. On the day of her first meeting, for which she even lied to her mom about going to a study room, she suffers the humiliation of having her face scribbled on by mean-spirited students at school. Devastated by her ruined appearance, Woo-yeon feels like giving up on everything, but at that very moment, an unexpected person appears before her.
The person who helps Woo-yeon as she cries with a ruined face is none other than Nam Ki-jeong. He takes her to the restroom, helps her wash her face, and offers comfort with an air of indifferent chicness. It turns out that Ki-jeong is the younger brother of one of the Spirit Fingers members, Nam Geu-rin (played by Park Yoo-na). Thanks to his modeling experience, he was occasionally invited to the club. However, Woo-yeon, in her distressed state, doesn't properly recognize Ki-jeong as the one who helped her, and their connection seems to pass by.
Woo-yeon officially joins Spirit Fingers. At first, she feels drawn to Gu Seon-ho, who led her to the club, but as if by a twist of fate, she keeps getting entangled with the prickly, same-aged Nam Ki-jeong. The two bicker like cat and dog whenever they meet, but in the process, they discover each other's scars and gradually open up. Spirit Fingers, which has currently released up to episode 4 on TVING, is planned for a total of 12 episodes. The drama had actually completed production in 2023 but was delayed for nearly a year while waiting for a release slot. As it has finally been unveiled after a long wait, anticipation is even higher for how the remaining story will capture the original's warm message and the heart-fluttering excitement of youth.
