Disney Plus's New Drama 'Pine': A Crime Period Piece Based on Yoon Tae-ho's Webtoon

Disney Plus has ambitiously launched its new drama 'Pine', generating significant anticipation as it's based on a popular webtoon. This drama, set in the 1970s, is both a period piece and a crime thriller, drawing inspiration from intriguing real-life events. Its source material, the webtoon 'Pine' by Yoon Tae-ho, the acclaimed author of 'Misaeng', instills confidence in its well-structured story and character development. The original webtoon concluded in 2015 and was published in four volumes, already boasting a large fanbase.

The drama's main setting is the Shinan waters in the 1970s. The core plot revolves around events unfolding as characters search for a sunken treasure ship. This narrative is inspired by the real 'Shinan Treasure Ship' incident of 1976, which came to light when a fisherman discovered artifacts. During the subsequent excavation by the Cultural Heritage Administration, it was shockingly revealed that looters had stolen over 130 artifacts, causing a significant stir. This real-life incident lends the drama a sense of realistic tension and immersion.
The series is directed by Kang Yoon-sung, known for his successful works 'The Outlaws' and 'Casino'. Notably, 'Casino', another of Director Kang's previous works, was also produced by Disney Plus and received high praise for its quality, despite being a period piece. Building on this experience, there's high anticipation for the directorial prowess Kang Yoon-sung will bring to 'Pine'. The excitement is palpable to see how he will re-create the 1970s Shinan seascape and the crime narrative that unfolds within it.
The drama features a large ensemble cast, offering a rich viewing experience. Among them, Yang Se-jong as Oh Hee-dong and U-Know Yunho as Jang Beol-gu deliver particularly striking performances. Both actors showcase a markedly different side from the upright, exemplary characters they've previously portrayed. This shift in their acting has come as a fresh surprise to viewers, intensifying curiosity about their respective characters.
Yang Se-jong's character, Oh Hee-dong, has been with his uncle, Ryu Seung-ryong's Oh Gwan-seok, since childhood, acting as his right-hand man. He's depicted as a formidable fighter who never backs down. U-Know Yunho, too, has stepped beyond his usual lively and positive image to take on a new character as a gangster. Surprisingly, this tough role seems to suit him remarkably well, adding to the drama's intrigue.
While many actors appear, Ryu Seung-ryong is undoubtedly the lead. It seems that, perhaps unintentionally, Ryu Seung-ryong has found great synergy with Disney Plus. He was also the lead in the highly acclaimed hit 'Moving', which is credited with revitalizing Disney Plus. Given his successful track record, there's a strong feeling that 'Pine' will also be an entertaining watch, further solidifying his connection with the platform.
With such a vast cast, it's challenging to list them all, but among them, Im Soo-jung, who plays Yang Jeong-suk, stands out. She previously showed fantastic chemistry with Ryu Seung-ryong in the movie 'All About My Wife'. Although their dynamic and relationship in 'Pine' will be entirely different, it will be interesting to see what synergy the two actors create by reuniting in one project.
As a period crime drama, 'Pine' vividly portrays how various types of people are drawn in by the rumor of the Shinan treasure ship. People from Seoul hear the news and make their way there, while others already in the area converge on the target. Given that the act involves illegal looting, even con artists gather. This convergence of individuals with diverse backgrounds and motives intensifies the drama's conflict and tension.
Although they briefly join forces for a specific goal, these characters are always ready to betray each other. Amidst this atmosphere of treachery and conspiracy, the drama, despite its serious subject matter, often injects comical situations that provide moments of laughter. This shows that 'Pine' is not just a crime drama but also incorporates elements of black comedy, allowing viewers to enjoy various genres simultaneously.
Comprising a total of 11 episodes, the drama 'Pine' features a unique odd-numbered episode count. Currently, up to episode 3 has been uploaded, with two new episodes expected to be released each week. The star-studded cast provides ample entertainment, and the meticulous historical accuracy in portraying the 1970s further enhances immersion. All eyes are on how the desires, betrayals, and ultimate fates of these characters surrounding the Shinan waters will unfold.
