Lost a Colleague, But Will Never Lose His Daughter: The Ruthless Revenge Drama Man on Fire
Is it the Return of a Legendary Masterpiece or the Birth of a New Original?
When I first encountered the title Man on Fire in Netflix's new release lineup, the first thing that came to mind was undeniably the movie version. I am talking about the legendary action film starring the great Hollywood actor Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning, who was hailed as a genius child actor at the time, receiving immense love worldwide. Like many others, I simply assumed that a classic masterpiece from the past had newly begun its streaming service on the Netflix platform. Because of the heavy weight the title carries and the strong lingering imagery left by the film, I could not easily predict that this would be a completely newly produced series.
From the Silver Screen to the TV Screen: A New Drama Reinterpreting the Original
However, upon looking closer at the detailed information of the work, I realized that it is not the familiar movie, but a new drama series borrowing the exact same title. Since there is a movie that achieved massive success under the same name in the past, I naturally thought it would be a drama remaking that film with a modern sensibility. Fundamentally, it is true that the public reputation and weight of the lead actor feel much more massive in the past movie version led by Denzel Washington. In addition, the young daughter character, the core figure the protagonist must risk his life to protect, also has the unrivaled presence previously shown by Dakota Fanning deeply engraved like an insurmountable wall, bringing both curiosity and concern about the new drama's casting.
The New John Creasy: A Field Agent Trapped in Trauma
In this drama, the main character 'John Creasy', who anchors the center of the story, is played by actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. He is a talented actor who has recently been drawing great attention in Hollywood for his solid acting skills and heavy screen presence. In the early part of the drama, John Creasy is deployed into an important military operation as a field commander with outstanding abilities. The operation, which seemed to be proceeding smoothly as planned, suddenly turns into an uncontrollable worst-case scenario when another unidentified armed organization storms the scene. The sight of the protagonist falling into extreme confusion without even grasping the variables of the operation induces high tension.
Miserable Failure and a New Proposal in Brazil
The opposing organization that stormed in had already perfectly grasped the operation and movement routes of John Creasy's team, and Creasy's unit was miserably subdued without even being able to put up a proper fight. Due to this terrible incident, John Creasy, who suffers from severe post-traumatic stress disorder, lives a ruined life, plagued by terrible nightmares every night and unable to get a normal night's sleep. His body and mind are so broken that being deployed into an operation again as a field agent is unimaginable. Then one day, a former superior offers him an unexpected invitation to come to Brazil and take on a task similar to a bodyguard.
A Broken Agent Meets a Teenage Girl, Poe Rayburn
Because the local situation in Brazil was politically very unstable ahead of an important vote, the superior desperately needed the escort of a highly trusted close associate. The superior immediately notices that John Creasy has been away from the field for a long time and is severely broken physically and mentally. To check his current skills, the superior conducts a surprise test on the spot, but Creasy is miserably beaten without even being able to react properly. Nevertheless, thanks to the strong faith and recommendation of the superior who knows his true value from the past better than anyone else, Creasy barely gets the job, and the curtain of the full-fledged narrative rises.
A Tragedy in an Instant: Death Witnessed Right Before Her Eyes
The superior's family he must protect looks very harmonious on the outside, but the daughter, 'Poe Rayburn' (played by Billie Boullet), is a typical rebellious teenage girl going through puberty who does not listen to her parents well and acts defiantly. On the day of the incident, Poe Rayburn disobeyed instructions to stay quietly at home, secretly went out, and was on her way back. The very moment the girl arrived home, the huge building where her father was staying exploded with a roar, instantly turning the area into a gruesome scene of chaos. Through the flames of the explosion, the girl meets her father's eyes for the last time and experiences the tragedy of directly witnessing the terrible death of her most beloved family member.
The Beginning of Revenge and the Appearance of Helper Valeria Mallo
John Creasy, who belatedly learns the whole story of this terrible explosion, is engulfed in uncontrollable anger beyond sorrow, and decides to find the real mastermind of this terrorist incident with his own hands and thoroughly punish them. A helper appears as a ray of light for him, who must track down a massive organization alone in the unfamiliar land of Brazil: 'Valeria Mallo', played by actress Alice Braga. Being well-versed in local affairs, she helps Creasy like a city guide and informant. While moving together in a car chasing the truth, the two accidentally fall into a desperate crisis of being caught by fierce local gang thugs.
Awakened Instincts: Combat Power Exploding to Survive
In a desperate moment of being unilaterally beaten and bloodied by the gang without any weapons, the combat memories of his past days as an elite agent, which had been sleeping deep inside John Creasy's body, miraculously revive. Rather than the trauma of the failed operation that was weighing him down, the primal unconsciousness of survival—the need to survive right here, right now, to complete his revenge—moves his body first. Headquarters tries to immediately return him to the U.S. as he is in danger, but Creasy firmly refuses this order, saying he will find the mastermind himself. To make matters worse, although the exact reason has not yet been revealed, the massive organization that caused the terror begins to move persistently to eliminate even the sole survivor, the young girl Poe Rayburn.
A Ruthless Pursuit Set in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The local police and authorities in Brazil are very displeased with a foreigner staying in their territory, recklessly digging into and stirring up the case. Even in this situation surrounded by enemies on all sides, John Creasy stays by Poe Rayburn's side until the end and actively utilizes Valeria Mallo's network and intelligence to prepare for a counterattack. He succeeds in capturing alive one of the gang members who tried to assassinate Poe Rayburn, and by applying ruthless and severe torture, he slowly takes steps closer to the reality and mastermind behind the terrorist organization. The unhesitating violence and speedy pursuit process provide viewers with an intense genre-specific thrill.
Expansion of the Original Novel and Spectacular Visual Catharsis
While the widely known movie version of Man on Fire only covered the contents of the first volume of the original novel, this newly produced drama series broadly includes the contents up to the second volume, further expanding the depth and scale of the narrative. Also, while the original setting of the novel was Italy, the drama completely moves the stage to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, providing new visual pleasure. Brazil's unique, overwhelming, and exotic cityscape, where dense residential areas endlessly stretch to the mountain peaks, acts as an excellent visual device that adds to the tension of the work. As it is a series that focuses on the essence of the hot and pure action genre rather than a heavy philosophical message, it will be an excellent choice for viewers who want to lightly and casually enjoy a thrilling revenge story.
