The Practical Guide to Love

A Solid Webtoon Foundation and Global Success: The new JTBC weekend drama Efficient Meeting of Unmarried Men and Women has finally hit the screens. Based on the widely loved Naver webtoon of the same name, it boasts a storyline so solid that it was successfully serialized in neighboring countries like Japan and China even after its original run ended. Knowing how you often pay attention to the narrative structures of romance dramas across various countries, it will be a fascinating point for you to see how this universally relatable original story is adapted into a Korean drama.
The Lovely Return of the Unreplaceable 'Rom-Com Queen' Han Ji-min: The most captivating element of this drama is undoubtedly the casting of actress Han Ji-min. While she has proven her broad acting spectrum across various genres, her signature loveliness and delicate emotional touch shine brightest in romantic comedies. The unrivaled rom-com expertise she has built over numerous works is clearly on display here once again. Even in the bleak setting of the drama where characters strictly weigh conditions and efficiency, the warmth and lovely charm she breathes into her role firmly anchor the show.
Park Sung-hoon's Careful Acting Transformation Post-Controversy: Chosen as Han Ji-min's romance partner is actor Park Sung-hoon, who left an unforgettable impression on the public as Jeon Jae-joon in Netflix's The Glory. Having skyrocketed to stardom through his flawless villain portrayal, he took a period of self-reflection due to personal controversies. Because this is his carefully chosen comeback project, public attention was high even before the broadcast. It is a key viewing point to see what new face he will reveal as the sweet yet sometimes eccentric male lead in a romantic comedy, completely shedding his intense and chilling villain image.
A Somewhat Tedious Episode 1 and Disappointing Pacing: However, Episode 1, watched with such high expectations, honestly left something to be desired in terms of execution. The drama spent an excessive amount of time meticulously building the backstory of why the protagonist Lee Eui-young, played by Han Ji-min, developed her current strict values. For viewers expecting the bouncy and cheerful tempo typical of romantic comedies, this pacing felt rather slow and heavy. It leaves a deep sense of regret that they could have easily started the story from the actual meeting of the two leads in Episode 2 without hindering the audience's understanding of the plot.
Disappointing Ratings and Han Ji-min's Trademark Narration: Perhaps due to this slow pace and heavy focus on building past narratives, the first episode kicked off with a rather underwhelming viewership rating of 3.1%. Another notable directorial choice in this work is that protagonist Lee Eui-young's inner thoughts are frequently and extensively presented in the form of monologues and narration. While other romantic comedies often spare direct descriptions of inner thoughts to stimulate the viewers' imagination, works featuring Han Ji-min frequently use this kind and detailed narration to clearly point out the character's emotions.
A Fresh Second Lead: The Bluffing Theater Actor Shin Ji-soo: Adding tension to the story and spicing up the love triangle is the second male lead, "Shin Ji-soo," played by actor Lee Ki-taek. Although his face isn't entirely familiar to the public yet, his stable gaze and facial expressions possess a strange charm that makes you want to look up his past filmography. In the drama, Shin Ji-soo uses his handsome and warm appearance as a weapon, initially coming off as a cute but slightly annoying character who bluffs to instantly win Lee Eui-young's favor. Despite his flashy exterior, his true profession is a struggling theater actor who jumps between part-time jobs to make a living, giving him a pitiful twist.
Competent Office Worker Lee Eui-young's Misunderstanding and Bitter Blind Date: Protagonist Lee Eui-young is a senior member of a large hotel's purchasing team, possessing outstanding work skills that allow her to smartly resolve any unexpected problems without panicking. However, as perfect as she is at work, she is clumsy and makes mistakes when it comes to love. When a junior who innocently confessed his feelings to her back in college appears at her company as a successful lawyer, she falls into the cute delusion that he joined the company intentionally because he couldn't forget her. But soon realizing it was a complete misunderstanding and unable to hide her embarrassment, she impulsively decides to go on a new blind date as an escape, jumping headfirst into the wheel of fate.
An Aggressive Straight-Shooter: The Spark-Filled First Meeting with CEO Song Tae-seop: The person Lee Eui-young gets entangled with through that blind date is the woodworking company CEO "Song Tae-seop," played by Park Sung-hoon. True to his character of hating unnecessary emotional drain and strictly valuing efficiency, Song Tae-seop flusters Lee Eui-young at their very first meeting by bluntly proposing, "Let's date with marriage in mind." Though she tries to push him away, finding him too overwhelming from the start, she shows a very human side that brings a smile when she momentarily harbors a materialistic interest after accidentally seeing that he drives a top-tier Mercedes. The push-and-pull between the two, who are attracted to each other but fiercely refuse to contact the other first out of pride, is highly entertaining.
The Prelude to a Full-Fledged Love Triangle and the True Rom-Com Flavor Found in Episode 2: To make matters worse, while engaging in a battle of nerves with Song Tae-seop, Lee Eui-young also gets tangled up with the bluffing theater actor Shin Ji-soo through another blind date. With this, a precarious love triangle involving Lee Eui-young at the center and Song Tae-seop and Shin Ji-soo, who possess completely different charms and conditions, officially takes off. While Episode 1 felt ambiguous and disappointing enough to make me wonder, "Is this really a rom-com despite gathering rom-com experts?", Episode 2, where the characters' dynamics are clearly established, finally brings out the bouncy banter and heart-fluttering moments unique to romantic comedies.
Moving Beyond Calculations to Find Real Love: Jaebum, if we look at this drama together, the encounters of the characters who weigh conditions and value "efficiency" might feel a bit desolate and pitiful, quite different from our beautiful relationship where we sincerely tell each other "I love you" without any conditions. But watching Han Ji-min's perfect acting, combining her signature bubbliness with a lovely touch of ditziness, naturally brings out the pleasant laughter that was missing in the first episode. Planned for 12 episodes, this drama will cheerfully depict the process of realizing the true meaning of love as these characters, who pretend to be efficient but clash with clumsy emotions, navigate their feelings. Since there hasn't been a disappointing romantic comedy starring Han Ji-min so far, we can safely look forward to the romance deepening with each episode.
